Uncle Sean's Update - 7/31/26

7/31/2026

Picture
Happy Friday!!!

Hard to believe we are already welcoming the month of August this weekend (although I admit I am done with this Texas heat)!  Here is the Uncle Sean Update for 7/31/26 (subscribe here for free):

A couple of economic updates:

  • It’s Fed Week!!!  The FOMC voted 9-3 to maintain interest rates at their current range of 3.5% - 3.75%.  The three dissenting votes (Hammack, Kashkari, and Logan – each of which are presidents of Fed Reserve Banks) all preferred a 25 bps increase in rates.
    • If you want to dig deeper, here is Chairman Warsh’s Press Conference Transcript (20 pages) and Press Conference Video (45:03).
    • Additionally, the dissenting members have provided beneficial and detailed explanations (all citing inflation trending too high when looking beyond supply-side shocks):
      • Statement from Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan on FOMC dissent - Dallasfed.org
      • Statement on My FOMC Dissent | Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (Neel Kashkari)
      • Statement from Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland president Beth Hammack regarding her vote at the Federal Open Market Committee’s July 28–29 meeting
    • Coming up is the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium (Aug 27-29) and then the FOMC meeting in Sept 15-16 which includes the Summary of Economic Projections (Dot Plot).

  • The BEA released the 2Q2026 GDP (first advanced estimate) showing an increase at an annual rate of 1.5% (1Q2026 was 2.1%).
    • Strong Consumer Spending once again led the way at 2.12% (1Q2026 was 0.37%)
    • Worth noting that Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers came in at a very strong 3.9% (1Q2026 was 1.7%).

  • The BEA also released June PCE (the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation) showing an annual 3.7% inflation rate (May was 4.1%) and Core PCE at 3.3% (May was 3.4%).
    • Headline PCE came down as of June mostly due to lower Gasoline and Other Energy Goods (recall Iran MOU / ceasefire at the end of June that has since fallen apart).
    • The Personal Saving Rate (as a % of DPI) came in at a very low 2.7%.

Now back to the rest of the update:
